What is Applied Equine Podiatry (AEP)??
The essence of Applied Equine Podiatry is the conscientious study of the equine foot, always striving to expose it to proper environmental stimuli, making every effort to promote proper structure and function, as we progress in achieving high performance. It is accepting the fact that the horse has the innate ability to heal itself and that domestication of the horse has caused imbalance and broken the golden rule of "Do No Harm". credit: KC LaPierre, IAEP.
What does an Applied Equine Podiatrist Do?
An Applied Equine Podiatrist (AEP) is a specialist in the equine foot.
A qualified AEP has extensively studied the anatomy and science of the equine foot and understands how it works and how to influence its development by use of both the high performance trim method (HPT) and environment. It encompasses not only the trim but also being skilled in the equally important job of considering all other factors that may be affecting the health of the foot - things like infection control, turnout schedule, living environment, exercise and nutrition.
Many common foot related problems such as navicular, laminitis, wall cracks etc are caused by how the horse is managed and health issues relating to the whole horse not so much by weakness in the hooves. Did you know that if thrush is left untreated is can be a major contributing factor in developing navicular disease?
A saying used by older generation of farriers is "You can't shoe a horse sound." If a horse is not 100% sound without shoes, then putting shoes on is NOT going to make the horse sound, it will just mask the problem. If there is a problem with the feet, it needs to be sorted out even if that means a reduction in workload or competition schedule. you would never work a horse with a bowed tendon or strained suspensory right? Then why continue to train a horse with sore feet??
AEP can not only benefit owners who want to make a positive change to their horses feet and overall health but it is an invaluable aid for horses that have "problem" feet that have not responded well to traditional remedial farriery (whether the horse is to remain unshod or return to shoes when the feet are healed.
What is the Spectrum of Usability?
This spectrum or wellness chart will identify/pinpoint areas of both strength and weakness. More importantly, this chart will help in determining how the horse should be used, the level of activity that will produce correct stimulus while preventing additional trauma.
What is the difference between a Farrier & AEP?
The differences are many; from the basic philosophy to the actual work performed. Farriery is a traditional craft based on ancient science with metal shoe at its core. An Applied Equine Podiatrist is a specialist (who may or may not be a farrier) who works with the horse owners to improve the health in the equine foot and takes a more holistic approach.
Kerri-Ellen is an Advanced Applied Equine Podiatrist (ADAEP) graduated from the Institute of Applied Equine Podiatry. IAEP is located in Ocala, Florida. Applied Equine Podiatry (AEP) is the in depth study of the horses foot and works to achieve and maintain equilibrium of function within the equine foot and achieve dynamic balance in the whole horse. By achieving proper structure and proper function within those structures we can attain optimal performance.
When Applied Equine Podiatry is used in conjuction with massage therapy, chiropractic, accupuncture and veterinary medicine it can help build a solid foundation on which to gain complete overall health and well being.
The HPT Method (High Performance Trim) is a detail oriented method that requires a trained eye capable of seeing the proper structure in an otherwise deformed capsule. The principles of Applied Equine Podiatry are:
1. Structure + Function = Performance
2. Suspension Theory of Hoof Dynamics
3. Correct force is the stimulus for correct growth
4. The horse has the innate ability to heal itself , providing
the environment is conducive to healing
5. Do No Harm!
We always work towards returning proper function to the hoof, but not at the expense of the comfort or well being of the horse.
